Chapter 11

John

I see you in that brush. I need this deer for my wife and I are nearly out of our food stores from winter. I aim at the place where the deer is walking through and I take the shot.

BANG!

As the bullet leaves the gun and flies through the sky, it hits Jason on his left side penetrating his wing membrane, slicing the area right behind the scales, and his front left paw (Authors note: I don't know what it's called).

I hear the deer fall to the ground and I rush over to it to see if it needs to be finished off.

And that's when I saw the deep blue scales. "Oh no. I didn't shoot a deer, I shot something else." Realizing that it was severely wounded but could be saved, I picked up the strange animal and went homeward as quickly as my feet would let me.

I trudged for about half a mile my feet sticking to the mud making it impossible to really move forward at a hasty pace.  As I got onto my dry, dirt driveway, I ran as swiftly as my old, worn down legs could carry me. And then, I could finally see the nearest animal clinic around, my home.

As I reached my humble abode, I saw my wife going down the creaking oak stairs to head towards the car. "Honey, clear the table." She looked up at me, saw that I was carrying an animal and immediately ran inside to do what I had said.

You see, this wasn't the first time that we've helped animals before.  Margret brought home a duck with a broken wing once and I've brought in several medium sized animals, but never one of this size.

As I placed this animal onto our brown, well-made oak table, Margret observed the damages. "Bullet sized wounds though the wing, chest, and leg. Exit wounds on all three. My goodness John, what did you shoot?"

“If I knew what I had shot, I would have told you already. Do you have any idea what it is?”

"No. I am not aware of what this thing is. All that I am aware of is that it seems to be a lizard with wings. Now come on, we need to fix the wing first or else it may never fly again."

Margret’s collected hands started grabbing medical supplies from the cabinets in the room. “We need to remove all the bullets and clean the wounds before we go any further,” Margret says out loud. I nod and grab washcloths and start getting them wet. Margret grabs a pair of medical pliers and starts taking out the bullets. I turn away as she does this, blood makes me queasy. “start cleaning,” Margret exclaims. I turn around and start flushing out the bloody wounds with water.

“Done.” I tell Margret, she looks at me, “put them in the sink, we need to start stitching these up.”

With our hands being drenched in its blood, Margret and I fixated on putting stitches into the near circular holes and wrapping the wounds so much that the spot which had the wound became a dying river, slowly and slowly losing its current.

"Well, we did it." Margret pronounced as she ran out of steam.

“Yes, we did it. But now what? I mean, what are the implications for us and this animal? Will the government make this accident a scene and take this thing away?" I asked fearing of what would happen to this animal.

Determined, Margret replied. "I have no knowledge of what will happen but we will defend for it even though it cannot. Nobody lives around here, I’m sure the government won’t know that any of this happened. Come on John, we still need to get it to the room."

Sighing, "Alright, I'll help." I rubbed my tired eyes and looked down the hallway that led to our bedroom, "But sleep is already calling me. Ok?"

"Ok." She replied as we began heaving this blue scaled animal towards our recovery room which was basically merely a spare bedroom in the back of our small, country house.

The room was nothing special. There was a queen size mattress in front of you. The right wall held a closet and on the wall to the left and where the door was, there were pictures of Margret and I either hunting, fishing, or hiking. My favorite picture was where we had traveled a few mountains in the Blue Ridge Mountains and had seen some amazing caves.

We finally placed it onto the homemade quilt which was on the queen size bed. When Margret thought of the best idea she had all day, "Come on John, let's get some sleep." She expressed in between breaths.

"That is hands down the best idea you've had all day. You want a medal for that?"

Smiling back, "No, but I would love a kiss."

So, I gave my love of my life what she asked for. A simple kiss. Nothing more, nothing less.

As we climbed into bed and told good night to each other, we immediately passed out.

I woke up. But not in my bed, in fact, I woke up on a hard surface, only I didn’t see any ground. When I finally able to get onto my sore knees, I saw Margret was waking up at this very moment.

"Where am I?"

"I’m not sure Margret"

"You're still in your bed sleeping. This is merely a dream." Replied an amazing creature dressed in gold scales. It almost looked like the animal that we just helped a minute ago, minus of course the sheer size and the gold.

"Who are you?"

"That is unimportant. What is more important is that I thank you for saving one of our kind."

"I cleaned them as best I could, the wounds weren’t fatal." Margret expressed. I knew she was right. She used to be an animal surgeon and helped save the lives of many animals.

"They weren't. They would only hurt him in the long run. But come you two, there is much that I need to show you."

Sensing his wisdom, we merely chose to walk in its footprints. Literary. "What I am about to show you is our history. Under any circumstance, and I do mean any, you must not tell anyone at all. This includes the young one at your quaint, little cottage sleeping."

"Ok, I guess we're agreement then."

"Then welcome to the history of dragons."

I was shocked. I mean dragons just don't exist. That's when it hit me. "Margret, I know what I shot."

"What did you shoot John?"

"A dragon." Her eyes went wide as she very quickly did the math.

The golden dragon interrupted us and briskly spoke with astounding power "Come over here immediately, I have so much to cover and so little time so hold on!" Immediately, he gave us thousands of years in mere minutes. And he even showed us where the blue dragon came. Knowledge poured into our brains as we learned about the new world of dragons.

“Ok, that's all the time I have if you happen to have any questions, now's the time to ask.” The big, gold dragon bellowed.

"I have two. One, why were we given Jessica's and James’s names but not the name of the dragon at our residence? And second, I could tell that he was traveling to somewhere but where if I may ask."

"I will tell you neither of those answers. But he will. I can assure you that. But good luck you have a dragon to deal with."

And with that everything just faded away."

THUD!

I jolted awake to hear a loud noise coming from what I'm guessing, the recovery room. Then Margret woke up and said to me,  "Is it me or did you have that strange dream last night?"

"Yes, I did. Now come on, I think that he's awake."
